“We Live Because the Sea Lives”
-Francis Toribiong, Master Diver and Environmental Innovator
Palau is home to vibrant coral reefs, over 1,400 species of fish, and 700 types of coral, creating one of the most diverse marine ecosystems on the planet. The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage site, highlights Palau’s unmatched marine, terrestrial, and cultural treasures. A global leader in conservation, Palau established the world’s first shark sanctuary and designated 80% of its exclusive economic zone as a marine sanctuary, blending indigenous wisdom with forward-thinking policies to protect its extraordinary biodiversity. These efforts are complemented by sustainable tourism initiatives such as the Palau Pledge, a world-first passport promise to protect the environment for future generations, and a ban on reef-toxic sunscreens, showcasing how island nations can drive impactful, innovative solutions.
Palau’s rich cultural heritage is equally remarkable, rooted in its status as one of the world’s last remaining matriarchal societies. Here, women, particularly elders, play a vital role in community decision-making, managing land and inheritance, and preserving societal values centered on conservation and community welfare. This cultural resilience is evident in practices such as the sharing of traditional knowledge through storytelling, arts, and ceremonies, ensuring that Palau’s legacy endures. By embracing both its cultural and ecological wealth, Palau showcases how its people, traditions, and pristine environment, reinforcing the importance of responsible tourism in safeguarding this island paradise.
